The crackdown, which has already resulted in significant penalty collections, could affect up to 1 lakh properties across the city. Despite appeals for voluntary self-reporting, few have complied, leading to stricter actions and increased penalties.
In a renewed bid to crack down on unauthorized commercial exploitation of residential properties, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has joined forces with the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL). The PMC has requisitioned data on commercial electric meters deployed throughout its jurisdiction from the state's electricity distribution organization.
A targeted operation is in progress, focused on residences being used for commercial activities while still benefiting from residential tax rates. Violators can expect penalties according to the law and additional taxes. Recent PMC action in Dhayari led to the identification and penalization of properties repurposed for activities such as packaging, engineering, and food services. Some transgressors faced a tripled property tax penalty, garnering about fifty lac rupees in unpaid dues from these commercial enterprises.
Despite an appeal from the PM for voluntary self-reporting of such misuse, responses have been minimal. The civic body's request for self-disclosure met with limited success, with few individuals stepping forward to declare their transgressions.
In a further move to address this issue, PMC has proposed the imposition of supplementary property taxes on wadas and other converted establishments, including popular food outlets. A directive to this effect has been issued by PMC commissioner Vikram Kumar.
