Chandigarh Union Territory (UT) has unveiled its proactive green initiative - the Chandigarh Energy Conservation Building Code (CHECBC) 2023 and Chandigarh CBC Rule 2023. Aimed at commercial structures, the new regulations will reduce energy costs and CO2 emissions. Commercial buildings, which account for over 30% of the city's total power consumption, will now need to be more energy efficient. This move illustrates Chandigarh's firm commitment towards a more sustainable future, setting an example in the face of increasing ecological challenges.
As a part of a robust green initiative, the Chandigarh Union Territory (UT) administration is set to implement the Chandigarh Energy Conservation Building Code (CHECBC) 2023 and Chandigarh CBC Rule 2023. The goal of this directive is to make commercial buildings more energy-efficient, thereby reducing both their energy expenses and CO2 emissions.
The draft CHECBC was published by the UT last Friday, opening the floor for public suggestions and comments over the following 30 days. Once this period ends, the administration will officially implement the code.
These regulations apply to commercial buildings or complexes that either have a connected energy load of 50 kW or more, a contract demand of 60 kVA or greater, or occupy a plot area of 1,000 square meters or more. It also covers buildings with a built-up area equal to or greater than 2,000 square meters (excluding unconditioned spaces in basements) and those intended for commercial use.
However, the code does not extend to plug loads, equipment, and building sections that use energy for manufacturing unless explicitly stated within the code. Existing structures that, after additions or alterations, meet the stipulated qualifying conditions will be required to comply with the code. Notably, commercial buildings account for over 30% of the city's total electricity consumption.
The code does not pertain to buildings used solely for private residential purposes. Instead, the stipulations focus on the building envelope and mechanical systems and equipment within commercial establishments.
The introduction of these regulations signifies a substantial stride in energy conservation, reflecting Chandigarh's commitment to creating a more sustainable future. By implementing this code, the administration aims to drastically cut energy expenditure and reduce the carbon footprint of commercial establishments.
As we embark on an era of greater ecological responsibility, the Chandigarh administration's decision to implement the CHECBC 2023 and Chandigarh CBC Rule 2023 showcases a significant stride towards a more sustainable future. Commercial buildings, contributing to over a third of the city's energy consumption, stand as primary targets in this green initiative. While the move promises a reduction in energy expenditure, the true victory lies in the potential decrease in CO2 emissions, pushing Chandigarh closer to its green goals.
