Kanpur Metro is nearing the launch of its extended service from IIT to Kanpur Central station, with a test run scheduled this month. Currently operating between IIT and Moti Jheel, the extended corridor will connect key business hubs like Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, and Nayaganj via an underground stretch. The new service will reduce travel time from 60-75 minutes to just 30 minutes. With construction and system testing nearly complete, the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) commends the project's progress. This milestone promises improved urban mobility and reduced traffic congestion, marking a transformative step for Kanpur's infrastructure.
Kanpur Metro is nearing the final stage of preparations for the extension of its service from IIT to Kanpur Central station. The metro currently operates along the Priority Corridor from IIT to Moti Jheel. Soon, a test run up to Kanpur Central will pave the way for the commercial launch of this extended service, which is expected to ease traffic congestion and enhance public transportation in the city. Preparations for the commercial operation of Kanpur Metro, extending from IIT to Kanpur Central station, are now in their final stages. A test run is scheduled to take place later this month, marking a significant step towards the official launch of the extended service.
Currently, Kanpur Metro operates along the Priority Corridor, covering a nine-kilometre stretch between IIT and Moti Jheel. However, the extension will soon allow city residents to travel all the way to Kanpur Central station. This new extension will connect major business hubs such as Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, and Nayaganj to the Metro network. The five stations along the underground stretch between Moti Jheel and Kanpur Central-namely Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, Nayaganj, and Kanpur Central-will be underground.
The Metro service between IIT and Moti Jheel will continue to operate at intervals of 5-6 minutes, while the underground stretch, which covers the stations between Moti Jheel and Kanpur Central, will have a frequency of every 10-12 minutes. The launch of this extended Metro service from IIT to Kanpur Central will significantly improve public transportation in the city and help reduce traffic congestion. At present, the road journey between IIT and Moti Jheel takes around 60 to 75 minutes, but with the Metro, commuters will be able to cover the same distance in just 30 minutes.
The construction of the Metro track on the 'up-line' from Moti Jheel to Kanpur Central has been completed, and work on installing the tracks, third rail system, signals, and other critical infrastructure at the stations along this stretch is now nearing completion. Earlier this week, a successful test run was conducted on both tracks between Moti Jheel and Nayaganj station. During this test, key systems such as signalling, track, and power supply were assessed, with the train operating in Automatic Train Protection (ATP) mode.
Sushil Kumar, Managing Director of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC), praised the progress of Kanpur Metro. He mentioned that the project had overcome numerous challenges and achieved significant milestones during its construction. He commended the speed and efficiency of the Kanpur Metro team, noting that the underground Metro route passes beneath some of the city's busiest areas, ensuring smoother and more convenient travel for commuters. Thanks to the coordination and cooperation of various departments, the installation and construction work at the stations is nearly finished, with only the final touches remaining. He further stated that a trial run up to Kanpur Central would commence later this month. Kumar expressed confidence that the remaining work on Corridor-1 would be completed as planned.
The expansion of Kanpur Metro from IIT to Kanpur Central station is a significant milestone for the city's public transportation system. The Metro's enhanced service will connect key business districts and ease the long-standing traffic congestion faced by commuters. With the test runs already underway and the final stages of construction being completed, the project is set to deliver a faster and more efficient mode of transport for city residents. As the launch draws near, the success of the Kanpur Metro is set to further transform the city's infrastructure and improve urban mobility for years to come.
