Kanpur, a major industrial city in India is facing delays in its Smart City Mission projects. These setbacks have placed the city in the "B" category in recent rankings. A state government review in September gave Kanpur a score of just 8 out of 10. The low score is mainly due to delays in completing important infrastructure projects. Missed deadlines and project-related issues contributed to this drop in ranking.

The District Magistrate of Kanpur Nagar has instructed the Smart City nodal officer to make sure the projects are finished on time. If they fail, the nodal officer faces possible negative reports in the state's records.

Out of 72 planned projects in the first phase of the Smart City Mission, 68 are completed. However, major projects like the Chunniganj Convention Centre and a multi-level parking facility are still unfinished. About 20 projects are still awaiting handover to the Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC). These include key projects in engineering, horticulture, traffic management and health departments.

Construction was delayed due to pending 'No Objection Certificates' (NOC) from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Nodal officer R.K. Tiwari assured that work will resume as soon as these issues are resolved.

The Chunniganj Convention Centre, with a budget of INR 96.10 crore, will offer a modern venue for events. It includes an auditorium for 300 people, three meeting halls, exhibition areas, a food court, and guest rooms. The multi-level parking facility costing INR 35.20 crore, will accommodate 348 cars and 176 bikes, aiming to reduce traffic on the busy VIP road.

Kanpur's move to the B category reflects the need for faster project completion. Especially as it competes with other cities in the Smart City Mission rankings.
