The houses were constructed as part of a project initiated to support residents living near the busy Unkal-Hosur bypass road. As Hubballi continues to grow, traffic congestion has become a significant issue, prompting local leaders to seek solutions that involve relocating residents to facilitate road improvements. Former MLA Jagadish Shettar had assured the community that they would receive new homes if they vacated their current residences, which are situated close to the road.

The project, known as 'Vanivilas Vasati Sankirana,' was funded by the Hubballi-Dharwad Smart City Project (HDSCL) at a cost of approximately INR 14 crore. Despite the completion of the houses, the allocation to beneficiaries has not yet taken place. Many families are facing challenges in their current living conditions, with some lacking basic amenities like toilets and bathrooms. One resident, Hanumanth Belligatti, expressed frustration, stating that while they are willing to move to the new homes for the sake of development, the delay in allotment is causing unnecessary hardship.

Local leaders have voiced concern, highlighting the difficulties faced by residents of Veeramaruti Nagar, who have been waiting for the promised housing. In response to the growing unrest, Vijay Kumar, an executive engineer with the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC), noted that there have been disputes among some beneficiaries regarding the allocation of the houses. He confirmed that a survey had identified 65 eligible beneficiaries and that plans are in place to finalise the allotment within the next 20 days. Kumar emphasised the corporation's commitment to ensuring a smooth process, stating that they aim to complete the handover of the houses in a single day.

The situation highlights a broader issue of housing allocation in rapidly urbanising areas like Hubballi. As cities expand, the need for adequate housing becomes increasingly pressing. Local authorities are encouraged to prioritise the timely distribution of housing to prevent deterioration of newly constructed properties and to support families in need of proper living conditions.
