In a significant development for residents of New Vaddem, the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has decided to regularise 544 housing structures allocated to municipal workers under the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) Housing Scheme. This resolution, passed during a special council meeting on Tuesday, marks a notable step in providing legal recognition to these homes, which have been occupied for decades.

The MMC's decision makes it the first civic body in Goa to take such action regarding the regularisation of houses under the Goa Housing Board. This initiative was spearheaded by transport minister and Dabolim legislator Mauvin Godinho, who presented the proposal during the meeting chaired by MMC chairperson Girish Borkar. The council's approval is based on records from the Mormugao Planning and Development Authority (MPDA), which outlines the original allocations for these structures.

Godinho expressed optimism about the impact of this decision, emphasising that the occupants of Goa Housing Board premises under the EWS Housing Scheme would receive their property rights. He highlighted that this initiative aims to enhance their standard of living and overall quality of life. The regularisation process is expected to provide residents with greater security and stability in their homes, which they have inhabited for approximately four to five decades.

The EWS Housing Scheme is part of a larger national initiative aimed at providing affordable housing to low-income families. Deepesh Priolkar, the chief officer of the Mormugao civic body, explained that the regularisation will adhere to the original plan for the allocated area, which is approximately 18-19 square metres per dwelling. He noted that the Goa Housing Board would need to verify the legal ownership of these properties, but the council's action provides a strong foundation for this process.

This decision is particularly important as it reflects a growing trend among local governments in India to address housing issues for marginalised communities.
