The Chandigarh administration has established a high-level committee to assess the financial feasibility of the proposed Metro project and address inter-governmental coordination for critical infrastructure, including a shorter route to Chandigarh International Airport and a city ring road. Tasked with delivering a report in two months, the committee includes officials from the UT and Punjab and Haryana governments. These projects aim to ease traffic congestion and improve regional connectivity, with the ring road expected to redirect outer traffic, reducing the burden on Chandigarh's urban roads.
The Chandigarh administration has constituted a special committee comprising senior officials from the Union Territory (UT) and the Punjab and Haryana governments. Approved by Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, the committee will evaluate the financial feasibility of the proposed Metro project and coordinate efforts for other critical infrastructure developments, including a shorter route to Chandigarh International Airport and the construction of a ring road around the city.
The committee has been tasked with submitting a detailed report within two months, addressing inter-governmental coordination issues with stakeholders like Chandigarh International Airport Limited (CHIAL), the Air Force Station Chandigarh, and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The ring road project, a long-awaited initiative to redirect outer traffic away from Chandigarh, is expected to ease congestion significantly. While some land acquisition hurdles have been resolved, coordination challenges among Punjab, Haryana, and NHAI remain a major concern.
The committee will also explore the viability of the Metro project in Chandigarh, examining inputs from Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports on similar projects across India. If the Metro is deemed unfeasible, the committee will propose alternative solutions for traffic decongestion, considering suggestions from the Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA).
The high-level committee includes senior officials such as the secretary of Urban Planning, Chandigarh administration; secretaries of transport from Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana; administrative secretaries of housing and urban development from Punjab and Haryana; and senior urban planners and engineers. These experts will provide a comprehensive analysis of the technical, financial, and logistical aspects of the proposed projects.
With a two-month timeline for the report, the committee's findings are expected to shape the future of Chandigarh's urban mobility and infrastructure development, potentially paving the way for transformative changes in the region's transportation landscape.
