The BBMP has identified 148 new illegal paying guest (PG) accommodations following inspections conducted over the past month, bringing the total number of such illegal facilities to 2,330. Additionally, the civic body discovered that 658 of these PGs have violated regulatory guidelines. According to BBMP data obtained by TOI, the east zone has the highest number of unauthorized PGs at 547, followed closely by Mahadevapura with 527. The east zone also reported the most violations, with 364 unauthorized PGs operating outside of regulations, while Mahadevapura had 29 non-compliant PGs.

It was noted that a man entered a paying guest accommodation in Koramangala and killed a woman in July, underscoring the security risks faced by residents of such facilities. In response, the BBMP and police announced a new set of guidelines for these accommodations. A senior BBMP official stated that residents in the east and Mahadevapura zones had been consistently voicing concerns about the issue of illegal PGs and their failure to comply with regulations, urging for stricter measures to manage the situation.

The city's authorized paying guest accommodations are not free from violations either. Among the 2,180 registered PGs, 595 were found to be breaching regulations, with Mahadevapura again leading the list with 276 non-compliant authorized PGs. These findings have underscored the significant challenges the civic body faces in enforcing guidelines. While zones like Bommanahalli and Yelahanka showed full compliance among registered PGs, the east and south zones experienced considerable non-compliance. It was noted that all 81 authorized PGs in Bommanahalli adhere to BBMP guidelines, whereas only 35 out of 116 registered PGs in RR Nagar are compliant.

Suralkar Vikas Kishore, the special commissioner for welfare at BBMP, expressed that the increase in unauthorized PGs and the prevalent non-compliance is a significant concern. He stated that they are intensifying inspections and enforcement actions to ensure that all PG accommodations comply with safety and regulatory guidelines.

The rising number of illegal PG accommodations poses significant safety and regulatory challenges for the BBMP. With intensified inspections and new guidelines, the civic body aims to address non-compliance and protect residents. The situation underscores the urgency for effective governance to ensure safety and adherence to regulations in paying guest facilities.
