The office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India has established a deadline of December 31 for any changes to the boundaries of administrative units. This decision allows the Bhaian Lal Sharma government to dissolve new districts that were created under the previous Congress administration. The freezing of administrative unit boundaries will be lifted until December 31.

In a letter sent to the chief secretaries and administrators of states and union territories on Tuesday, the census office announced that the boundaries of administrative units for the upcoming census will be frozen starting January 1, 2025. Previously, the deadline for freezing boundaries had been extended to June 6.

The letter requested that necessary instructions be issued to all relevant parties in the state and union territory to implement any changes in administrative boundaries by December 31 at the latest. It also stated that copies of the notifications regarding jurisdictional changes should be sent to the Directorate of Census Operations in the respective state or UT, along with a copy forwarded to the office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner.

Following this communication, it was believed that the Bhajan Lal government might dissolve some smaller districts that were established during the Gehlot administration. The government was considering merging these smaller districts with nearby ones, which could include Dudu, Khairthal-Tijara, Kekri, Salumber, Sanchore, and Shahpura.

A cabinet sub-committee led by Madan Dilawar has been evaluating the establishment of 17 districts created by the Ashok Gehlot-led government. The committee is expected to finalize its report shortly and submit it to Chief Minister Sharma. Previously, an expert committee chaired by retired IAS officer Lalit K. Panwar submitted its report to the state government on August 30. Sources indicate that the committee deemed several of the smaller districts unsuitable.

As the deadline approaches, the Bhajan Lal Sharma government is poised to make significant changes to administrative boundaries, which may reshape the political landscape in Rajasthan. The final report from the cabinet sub-committee will further clarify the future of these districts.
