The east-west arm, now operational, connects Marve to the Western Express Highway, while the southern arm is expected to open by year-end. Despite some tension during the inauguration, the bridge currently allows only one-way traffic for two-wheelers and light motor vehicles due to ongoing Metro construction.
In a significant relief for Malad residents, the T-shaped flyover designed to alleviate traffic congestion at Mith Chowki was partially opened for vehicular traffic recently. Nearly two years after construction began, the east-west arm of the bridge was inaugurated by Union Minister and Mumbai North MP Piyush Goyal, alongside Congress MLA from Malad, Aslam Sheikh, BJP MLA Yogesh Sagar, and senior officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), including Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani.
Constructed at a cost of INR 45 crore, the 800-metre-long flyover features two arms extending towards the east and south. While the east-west arm, connecting Marve to the Western Express Highway, is now operational, the other arm is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
The partially completed bridge currently accommodates one-way traffic only. Due to the elevated north-south Metro 2-A line running above it, only two-wheelers and light motor vehicles (LMVs) are permitted to use the bridge, with entry for buses and heavy vehicles restricted.
Initially scheduled for a January 2024 deadline, the bridge's opening was postponed due to delays in piling work necessary for the foundations. In related news, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is set to inaugurate several projects focused on the beautification and restoration of key heritage and tourist sites in Mumbai shortly.
