Nashik's CIDCO leasehold properties to gain freehold status under CM's plan

Synopsis

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has assured the residents of Nashik that he will grant freehold status to all homes built and sold on leasehold by the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO). This move addresses a long-standing demand by CIDCO residents, who have been unable to freely develop their properties due to the leasehold nature of the land. Shinde has directed the CIDCO chairman to prepare the necessary proposal for conversion. The chief minister also promised to look into the residents' concerns regarding the high property taxes levied on both residential and commercial CIDCO properties. This decision is expected to provide much-needed relief to Nashik's CIDCO homeowners.

In a move that will bring relief to residents of Nashik, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has assured the conversion of leasehold properties owned by the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) to freehold status. The CM gave this assurance while addressing a gathering at a local program for the Balasaheb Thackeray Smriti Udyan in the Gangapur Road area held last week.

Shinde has instructed the CIDCO chairman, Sanjay Shirsat, to prepare the necessary proposal and get it approved. This decision comes in response to the long-standing demand of Nashik's CIDCO residents, who have been seeking the conversion of their leasehold properties to freehold for several years.

The chief minister also assured the residents that he would look into their concerns regarding the higher property tax levied on both residential and commercial properties within CIDCO's jurisdiction. Ajay Boraste, the Shiv Sena deputy leader and former leader of the opposition in the Nashik civic body, stated that the CIDCO properties were initially leased out for a period of 90 years, and residents have been facing various issues due to the leasehold status, including the inability to develop their properties.

In a related development, in November 2022, CIDCO had decided to shut its Nashik office and transfer the employees to other offices. However, the CIDCO residents strongly opposed this decision, and in response, Chief Minister Shinde had directed the CIDCO administration to withdraw its decision to close the Nashik office.

The chief minister's assurances have brought hope to the CIDCO residents in Nashik, who have long been seeking the conversion of their properties from leasehold to freehold status, which will provide them with greater flexibility and control over their homes.
