The Indore Municipal Corporation has been allocated around 8.5 hectares of land across two sites for the construction of affordable housing under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) 2.0 initiative. IMC Commissioner Shivam Verma has highlighted that the central government has established a significant target to complete the construction of these houses by 2029. To align with this ambitious goal, the corporation has initiated the process of acquiring the necessary land.

In this regard, a request was submitted to the district administration, leading Collector Asheesh Singh to allocate 4.892 hectares of land in Limbodagari and an additional 3.764 hectares in Palakhedi specifically for the PMAY 2.0 housing scheme. The corporation has officially taken possession of these parcels of land and has erected boards to signify municipal ownership. These plots are designated for the development of multistoried apartments, which will cater to the needs of beneficiaries seeking affordable housing.

The commissioner emphasised that this initiative is expected to provide affordable housing options to a substantial number of residents in Indore, thereby addressing the pressing issue of housing shortages within the city. The availability of these new homes is anticipated to alleviate some of the challenges faced by individuals and families struggling to find suitable accommodation.

In addition, senior officials from the Indore Municipal Corporation noted that the second phase of the PMAY has introduced a new provision allowing for flats to be rented out at affordable rates. They explained that there is a significant population residing in the city temporarily or those who have alternative plans and, therefore, do not apply to purchase the affordable PMAY flats. Nevertheless, these individuals are currently burdened by high rental costs. To address this situation, the civic body plans to offer the newly constructed apartments under PMAY 2.0 for rent at affordable rates once the projects reach completion.

The timeline for constructing affordable houses under PMAY 2.0 is set at five years. Senior officials from the Indore Municipal Corporation have reiterated their commitment to ensuring the timely completion of these housing projects while striving to deliver quality homes to the beneficiaries. This dedication underscores the corporation's efforts to improve housing accessibility and support the growing population of Indore.

The Indore Municipal Corporation's proactive approach towards affordable housing under PMAY 2.0 reflects its commitment to addressing the pressing housing challenges in the city. By securing land and introducing provisions for affordable rentals, the corporation aims to improve living conditions for a significant number of residents. Ensuring timely project completion and maintaining quality standards will be crucial in fulfilling the housing needs of the community, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable urban environment in Indore.
