Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to relocate Narmada Trunk line at a cost of INR 5.29 crore

Synopsis

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has discovered a vital Narmada trunk line beneath a commercial plot in Chandkheda, currently on the market. Construction on this land is prohibited under TP Scheme No. 76/B, prompting the civic body to approve a INR 5.29 crore relocation plan. An AMC official attributed the issue to a past error by the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority, which laid the line in 2003 without proper land designation. Additionally, the AMC plans to extend the Narmada drinking water supply to Chandkheda and surrounding areas, utilizing savings from the Jaspur-KD Hospital line project for the trunk line's relocation.

The municipal corporation has recently uncovered that a crucial Narmada trunk line is situated beneath a commercial plot located in Chandkheda, which is currently being offered for sale. Due to the presence of this trunk line, construction cannot take place on the plot, as it falls within the boundaries of TP Scheme No. 76/B. Consequently, the civic body has made the decision to relocate the trunk line, with an estimated cost of INR 5.29 crore for the project. This proposal to undertake the relocation was formally approved during a meeting of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's (AMC) water and sewage committee that took place on Monday.

An official from the AMC, who preferred to remain unnamed, pointed out that this situation arose from a mistake made by the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority. The official elaborated that back in 2003, the authority laid down the main trunk line on land designated for the Gujarat Housing Board. Subsequently, the authority created TP Scheme No. 76/B, which reserved a commercial plot on the same piece of land, leading to the current conflict.

Furthermore, the AMC has a plan in place to extend the Narmada drinking water supply to several areas, including Chandkheda, Motera, Ranip, and Sabarmati. This plan involves the installation of a significant 2,500mm diameter main supply line that will run from the Jaspur treatment plant to KD Hospital. The route will pass through Vaishnodevi Crossroads and ultimately connect to the existing 1,600mm diameter main trunk line located in Chandkheda. It was during this expansion process that the AMC discovered the unexpected situation of the trunk line running beneath the commercial plot that is currently up for sale.

According to the official, the AMC had initially allocated a budget of INR 94.72 crore for the installation of the Jaspur-KD Hospital line. Throughout the project, the corporation managed to save INR 3.39 crore from the original allocation. This amount, along with additional funds that have been identified, will now be utilized for the purpose of relocating the trunk line to ensure that construction on the commercial plot can proceed without any further complications.

This proactive approach not only resolves existing infrastructure issues but also facilitates future development, ensuring the growth of Chandkheda and its surrounding areas. The AMC's commitment to improving water supply infrastructure reflects a strategic move towards sustainable urban development.
