The Chhattisgarh government has received approval from the Centre for the construction of 8,46,931 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY) in rural areas. This follows the government's pledge to build 18 lakh houses in the state, addressing a backlog amidst the poor implementation of the scheme in the state. The government has now allocated the state's share of funding and included beneficiaries from previous housing schemes as well. The state government has also requested a separate housing scheme for surrendered Naxalites and those affected by Maoist violence. Alongside PMAY, the state has launched its own "Niyad Nellanar" initiative for village development and completed most of the houses sanctioned under the PM-JANMAN scheme for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups.
Chhattisgarh's Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai announced that the central government has approved the construction of over 8 lakh houses in rural areas under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY). The government has sanctioned 8,46,931 houses. This comes after the new government, elected in December 2023, pledged to build 18 lakh houses in the state.
The government says that PMAY was poorly implemented in the state, leaving 18 lakh families without homes. Thus, the new government is taking steps to address this, including allocating the state's share of funding.
The government has also included beneficiaries from the previous housing schemes, which included 47,090 houses. The beneficiaries were given first instalment of INR 25,000 each (for house construction) by the previous government and now they are being given the next instalment.
The government has also requested the central government to approve separate housing units under PMAY for surrendered Naxalites and those affected by Maoist violence. The government had promised to construct 10,000 houses for them.
In addition to the PMAY scheme, the state government has launched its own initiative, "Niyad Nellanar" (Your Good Village), focusing on development in villages near security camps.
The government has also completed the majority of 24,064 houses sanctioned under the PM Janjati Adivasi Nyay Maha Abhiyaan (PM-JANMAN) scheme, aimed at improving the lives of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).
The Chhattisgarh government's focus on housing construction reflects its commitment to improving the lives of its citizens, particularly in rural areas. The ambitious target of 18 lakh houses, coupled with initiatives like "Niyad Nellanar" and PM-JANMAN, demonstrates a comprehensive approach to development and social welfare. The government's efforts to address the backlog in PMAY implementation and provide housing for vulnerable groups are crucial steps towards achieving a more equitable and prosperous Chhattisgarh.
