Guwahati's property tax collections up by Rs 40 crore

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has declared an offer of a 10 percent discount on property tax payments made before May 30. The Mayor of GMC, Mrigen Sarania, claimed that the corporation's property tax collection has significantly increased by approximately Rs 40 crore, on account of their rigorous policy implementation/ GMC has experienced a substantial increase of 53% in property tax, 9% in trade licensing, and 40% in funds generated from its multiple branches, demonstrating notable growth in revenue collection efforts.



In a press conference held last week, Sarania announced that the corporation's revenue has increased by 42% in the financial year 2022-23, when compared to the previous fiscal year 2021-22. Also, if taxpayers settle their liabilities from May 1 to May 30, they will receive a discount of 10%. He mentioned that GMC's effort to increase tax collection since December of last year has yielded positive results. He further added that the amount of property tax collected in the current year has exceeded the estimated amount for 2021-22, with a total of Rs 110 crore collected compared to Rs 70 crore collected.



According to Sarania, the implementation of an online format for trade licensing has resulted in a remarkable increase in the number of licenses issued, rising from 48,354 in 2021-22 to 70,127 in 2022-23. In terms of number retention, there has been an upward surge from 2.5 lakh to 3.54 lakh during the same timeframe. He added that GMC has accomplished noteworthy success within the past year by connecting GMC holding numbers with APDCL consumer numbers.



Currently, the GMC's council has completed a one-year term and has reported consistent corporate growth during this period. Sarania revealed that they have put funds into multiple initiatives and undertakings focused on improving infrastructure and development. GMC acknowledged the establishment of multiple waste transfer facilities as well as waste management initiatives at Boragaon and Belortol as significant accomplishments.



The GMC has begun landfill mining at the Boragaon dump site in accordance with the Central Pollution Control Board's (CPCB) guidelines for disposing of legacy waste in 2021. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 172 crore. Likewise, the municipal authorities have announced the commencement of the creation of a compost and RDF plant designed to handle 150 tonnes per day of mixed municipal solid waste, situated in Belortol, Guwahati. This project has a budget of Rs 30.91 crore.



The Guwahati Corporation is a renowned business enterprise within the state of Assam. The primary revenue stream for the GMC comes from property taxation. The interest rates for property taxes usually vary between 5% and 20%. The GMC has enhanced the transparency and simplicity of the property tax assessment and collection procedures. The GMC was granted the power to approve the self-evaluation of an individual's property tax and limit the rise or fall in house tax to a predetermined range.
