Karnataka Government considers Nelamangala site for new international airport in Bengaluru

Synopsis

The Karnataka state government is actively searching for a suitable location to build a second international airport in Bengaluru. The decision is driven by the city's growing development needs, increasing passenger traffic, and cargo pressure. After extensive evaluation, the final site appears to be near Nelamangala, situated along National Highway 75. The government had examined several locations, and based on the Airports Authority of India's (AAI) technical standards, the site between Nelamangala and Kunigal seems to be the chosen location. The existing Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has been experiencing a surge in air traffic, prompting the development of a second international airport.

The Karnataka state government is actively searching for a suitable location to build a second international airport in Bengaluru. According to sources, after extensive evaluation and consideration, the final site appears to be near Nelamangala, situated along National Highway 75.

The decision to construct a second international airport in Bengaluru is driven by the city's growing development needs, increasing passenger traffic, and cargo pressure. The government had examined several locations around the city. Based on the technical standards set by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the site between Nelamangala and Kunigal seems to be the chosen location.

The existing Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has been experiencing a surge in air traffic, prompting the state government to initiate the development of a second international airport. The 11th round of discussions regarding this project was held last Friday, and in a meeting chaired by the Deputy Chief Minister, various sites, including Harohalli in Kanakapura Road, Bidadi, and Nelamangala, were reviewed.

While Harohalli near Kanakapura Road was considered to serve passengers in the southern part of Bengaluru, it was found that the area, located near the Tamil Nadu border, lacks scope for significant development. On the other hand, the Nelamangala area is seen as more suitable from the perspective of overall development.

If the airport is established in the Nelamangala area, it will not interfere with the connectivity on Mysore Road and Kanakapura Road. The current NICE Road, along with the proposed Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) and Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR), will provide better connectivity to passengers from the southern part of Bengaluru.

The site near Nelamangala is approximately 30 kilometers from the city, starts near the first toll on National Highway 75, and is well-connected to the national highway and the railway line. Additionally, there is a significant amount of government land available in this area, making the project more feasible, according to a senior official.

Once a final decision is made, a proposal will be sent to the Airports Authority of India (AAI). Officials claim that the current location meets 15 key criteria necessary for the establishment of the new airport. The restriction on building a new airport within a 150 km radius of the existing international airport expires in 2035.
