Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway nears 60% completion, set for 2025 launch

Synopsis

The Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway in Maharashtra is about 60% complete and is set to be fully operational by July 2025. This eight-lane expressway will connect key hubs, including the Mumbai-Goa highway, Navi Mumbai International Airport, JNPA, and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Managed by the National Highway Authority of India's Thane unit, the project features segments like a 2.25 km Sasupada-Ghodbunder bridge and a 26.4 km stretch in Palghar, both nearing completion. The Morbe tunnel excavation is complete, with another tunnel planned. While some parts, like the Acchad-Dahisar underpass, lag behind, the project promises to enhance connectivity across Maharashtra.

The construction of the Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway in Maharashtra has reached about 60% completion. This eight-lane expressway will not only link the Mumbai-Goa highway but also connect key hubs such as the Navi Mumbai International Airport, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The project is divided into various packages with different completion timelines, and is expected to be fully operational by July 2025. Currently, 98% of these packages have been executed. This expressway is part of a larger development project worth INR 1,400 crore that is ongoing in the state.

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI)'s Thane project implementation unit is managing a 300 km section of this expressway. One of the nearly completed projects is a 2.25 km, four-lane bridge connecting Sasupada and Ghodbunder (Varsova), which is now 98% finished. In the Palghar district, a 26.4 km, eight-lane stretch between Ganjad and Talasari is 90% complete. Meanwhile, the vehicular underpass between Acchad and Dahisar has seen slower progress, with only 41% completed as of last month, although it was initially planned to be finished by November this year.

One notable achievement is the successful excavation of the 4.16 km Morbe tunnel in the Panvel taluka, which is part of the expressway heading towards Mumbai. By next month, work is expected to start on another tunnel of similar length on the road leading to Vadodara. This tunnel interchange will facilitate direct access to important transport hubs, including ports and airports, through the expressway.

Overall, the Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway is progressing steadily. Major segments like the Morbe tunnel and the Sasupada-Ghodbunder bridge are almost complete. While some parts, such as the Acchad-Dahisar underpass, still require significant development, other sections, like the stretch in Palghar district, are nearing completion. Upon its full completion, the expressway will greatly improve connectivity across Maharashtra, linking critical centres such as ports, airports, and key road networks.
