The failure of civic bodies in Hyderabad to ensure that traffic carrying capacity of a road is assessed before giving permission for a new building has left many residential areas choked under vehicle pressure. Builders are not conducting mandatory Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) when seeking building permissions, and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and other ULBs within Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority are not strict about conducting traffic studies. With permissions being given freely, small by lanes are turning into major bottlenecks, causing gridlock and making it difficult for residents to access their homes.
The increasing number of high-rise buildings in Hyderabad, India, is causing severe traffic congestion in already congested residential areas due to the failure of civic bodies to conduct mandatory Traffic Impact Assessments (TIAs). While builders flout rules by not conducting TIAs, civic bodies such as the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and other ULBs are not strict about conducting traffic studies.
This lack of oversight has resulted in major bottlenecks, with small bylanes turning into gridlocks. Residents across several areas are struggling with choked approach roads to their homes due to the unrestricted issuance of building permits.
According to residents large gated communities have recently been erected on the route in Sainikpuri. Residents are struggling because the the approach road for the route is less than 40-feet, thereby allowing only one car to pass at a time. The situation is worse in commercial areas where buildings come up without keeping 10% parking space.
There is a dire need for an integrated approach by the GHMC with all stakeholders. GHMC officials said it is mandatory for major residential projects to conduct TIAs from 2020, and they are working to rectify areas where permits were given without assessment. However, the lack of strict enforcement and accountability continues to impact the city's traffic and residents' quality of life.
There have been several instances of the failure of civic bodies in Hyderabad to ensure proper planning and development. One such instance is the flooding of the city during heavy rains in 2020, which was attributed to poor drainage systems and illegal encroachments. Many citizens criticized the civic bodies, including the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), for their lack of preparedness and failure to take adequate measures to prevent flooding.
The civic bodies faced widespread public outrage and criticism for their negligence in maintaining the city's infrastructure. The current issue of traffic congestion and gridlock due to unchecked building permissions and lack of traffic studies is yet another instance of civic bodies failing to ensure responsible development in Hyderabad.
