Maharashtra to launch student housing project in Tardeo as part of new housing policy

The Maharashtra government has identified a property in Tardeo, owned by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), featuring compact studio apartments, for its first student housing project in the city.

According to Valsa Nair Singh, the Additional Chief Secretary in the state housing department, the project is part of Maharashtra's new housing policy. The objective is to offer "modern and secure studio apartments" on a rental basis to students in cities such as Mumbai, Pune, and Nashik, where there is significant demand due to the large number of students coming from outside the state.

Singh noted that there are currently very few hostels or student accommodation options available to meet this need. She mentioned that this situation is urgent and indicated that the Tardeo building had been selected for the project, though it still requires cabinet approval. Additionally, she highlighted that the state government is looking for agencies, especially universities and colleges, to operate and manage these facilities on a rental basis.

Once the project gains traction and becomes established, plans are being developed to create a comprehensive strategy to attract private developers. This will involve offering incentives such as additional floor space index (FSI) and reduced premiums to encourage their participation.

The new state housing policy is set to concentrate on three key areas: senior citizen living, student accommodation, and affordable housing. Recently, the state government made a detailed draft policy document on senior citizen housing available to the public, inviting feedback from citizens.

Nair indicated that the government is already engaging with several prominent developers and stakeholders who have expressed strong interest in undertaking senior citizen housing projects as part of their corporate social responsibility efforts. She also mentioned that discussions are underway with various NGOs and medical centres/facilities to involve them in the management and operation of these projects on a professional basis.
