Gujarat has reached a significant milestone in housing construction under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. The state has completed a substantial number of housing units under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), with over 5.57 lakh housing units finished under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural) as well.

In the past nine years, more than 14 lakh houses have been built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in Gujarat, including over 8.68 lakh units under the urban scheme. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015, the scheme is designed to provide adequate housing to the economically weaker sections of society and to homeless individuals in rural areas, with the goal of enhancing their standard of living.

According to a statement, over 540,000 houses have been approved either in the name of women or under joint ownership. Notably, within this scheme, 322,000 houses representing 60 percent have been allocated to beneficiaries from Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Caste communities. Gujarat is noted for its leading position among states in benefiting over 600,000 individuals through their first housing loan under the Credit Link Subsidy component of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban).

One beneficiary recounted their previous living conditions, describing their house as being made of raw mud. They shared that during rainy days, water would leak through the roof, causing constant fear that the building might collapse at any time. They expressed deep concern for their family's safety.

In 2020, the Central Government announced that affordable rental housing would be provided to the urban poor and workers through the Affordable Rental Housing Complexes (ARHCs) scheme under the Atmanirhar Bharat Abhiyan initiative. Within three months of this announcement, Gujarat became the first state in the country to receive approval for the project, converting 393 houses in the Suda area of Surat city into rental units under Model-01. The Central Government selected six states from across India for the Global Housing Technology - India Light House project, with Rajkot in Gujarat being one of the chosen locations.

Under the Site House Project in Rajkot, a total of 1,144 dwellings of the EWS-2 type, each with a carpet area of 39.77 square metres, have been constructed using monolithic concrete construction technology. Additionally, an extra incentive assistance of Rs 20,000 has been provided under the Chief Minister's Incentive Scheme as part of the 100 percent Phala Yojana of the State Government.

Gujarat has received a total of 14 awards for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) to date. In 2017, the state was awarded first place under the Credit Link Subsidy component by the Central Government. Subsequently, in 2019, Gujarat received further awards from the Central Government for the PM Awas scheme.

Three beneficiaries from Gujarat State received awards in the Best House Construction category under the BLC component, according to the release. In 2022, Gujarat was recognised by the Central Government in seven different categories for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban). Additionally, the state received three awards for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural). The Dang district was honoured with the overall performance award in the implementation of PMAY (Rural) by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, for the year 2018-19, securing first place.

In 2019-20, the Ranawav taluka of Porbandar district was awarded second place for overall performance in the implementation of PMAY (Rural). Also in 2019-20, individual awards for best performance were given to A.K. Shrimali, Extension Officer of Kathlal in Kheda district, and Sarpanchshree Sarlaben Ninama, office bearer of Vijayanagar in Sabarkantha district.

Gujarat's impressive achievements in housing development underscore the state's commitment to improving living standards through various housing schemes. The recognition received under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and other related programmes highlights Gujarat's successful implementation of these initiatives. With significant awards and milestones, including accolades for individual performance and overall project execution, Gujarat continues to set a benchmark in the housing sector. The state's proactive approach and effective utilisation of resources serve as a model for others, reflecting its dedication to enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
