Over the weekend, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the first instalment of funds under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) to thousands of beneficiaries in rural areas. This was announced by Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan during an online meeting with state rural development ministers. The event, which took place in Jamshedpur, included a traditional "griha pravesh" ceremony, marking the entry of around 2.6 million beneficiaries into their newly built homes.
As part of the event, PM Modi released a total of INR 2,745 crore, which went to about one million beneficiaries in Jharkhand. These individuals received the first instalment of funds under the PMAY-G scheme. State elections are scheduled for later this year in Jharkhand. Additionally, acceptance letters for the upcoming financial year 2024-25 were distributed to the targeted beneficiaries. Minister Chouhan emphasised the significance of this event, noting that a large number of people attended in person, and many more joined online.
The overall target of the PMAY-G programme is to build 2.95 crore houses by March 2024, with 2.65 crore homes already completed. Minister Chouhan highlighted the recent simplification of the scheme's rules to ensure more people can benefit. The government has removed certain exclusion criteria, such as owning a two-wheeler, a refrigerator, or a landline phone. Additionally, the monthly income limit for beneficiaries has been raised from INR 10,000 to INR 15,000. The PMAY-G programme, which was extended last month for the period 2024-25 to 2028-29, aims to build an additional two crore houses, benefiting around 10 crore individuals. Minister Chouhan believes this scheme will play a vital role in creating a poverty-free and developed rural India.
