Synopsis

The first Delhi section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway between DND Flyway and Jaitpur is expected to be completed within the next few weeks, according to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. The stretch is part of the larger DND-Faridabad-Sohna access-controlled corridor and is expected to ease congestion for commuters travelling from Noida, East Delhi and South Delhi towards Haryana and western India. The project is also expected to improve connectivity to the upcoming Noida International Airport at Jewar through a separate under-construction link road. Officials said the corridor is part of a broader Delhi-NCR decongestion and mobility improvement plan.

The first Delhi section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway from the DND Flyway to Jaitpur is likely to become operational within the next few weeks, according to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. The update came after a joint inspection of the DND-Faridabad-Sohna access-controlled corridor along with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and senior officials from Delhi, Haryana and the central government.

The upcoming stretch is expected to improve road connectivity for commuters travelling from Noida, East Delhi and South Delhi towards Faridabad, Sohna and western India. Once opened, the corridor will provide signal-free movement towards Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra through the larger Delhi-Mumbai Expressway network.

The Delhi stretch starts near the DND Flyway at Maharani Bagh and passes through Kalindi Kunj and Jaitpur before connecting to the Faridabad bypass and the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway in Haryana’s Nuh district. The route is expected to reduce traffic load on several busy Delhi roads currently used by vehicles heading towards Faridabad and other NCR regions.

Officials said the remaining work on the nearly 9-km Delhi section was delayed mainly due to pending approvals linked to the Agra Canal crossing from the Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department. Government updates shared earlier had indicated that over 94 per cent of the physical work on the package had already been completed.

The DND-Jaitpur section is part of the larger 59-km DND-Faridabad-Sohna corridor, which has been divided into three construction packages. Two sections are already operational, while the final Delhi portion is nearing completion.

The expressway project is also important for connectivity to the upcoming Noida International Airport at Jewar. A 31.5-km link road connecting the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway to the airport is currently under construction. Officials expect the new connectivity route to reduce travel time from South Delhi to Jewar Airport to nearly 45 minutes after completion.

During the inspection, Gadkari said the Centre was working on multiple infrastructure projects worth nearly INR 34,000 crore across Delhi-NCR. These projects include expressways, tunnels, elevated corridors and road widening works aimed at reducing congestion and improving regional connectivity.

Discussions were also held on proposed six-lane connectivity projects linking Urban Extension Road-II with the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway and improving Noida-Faridabad road access. The government is focusing on strengthening inter-city road infrastructure as vehicle movement across NCR continues to increase.

The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is among India’s largest access-controlled highway projects connecting Delhi and Mumbai through Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra. Several stretches of the corridor are already open to traffic, while the remaining sections are being completed in phases.
